高齢者ドライバーによる交通事故のニュースが絶えません。東京池袋の交差点で、旧通産省工業技術院の元院長＝a former head of the Agency of Industrial Science and Technology that fell under the control of the former Ministry of International Trade and Industry が運転する車の暴走で、母娘が亡くなったニュースは衝撃的でした。

widower (妻を亡くした男性)が、匿名＝ anonymity での記者会見で、悲痛な胸の内を語られました。
「最愛の妻と娘を突然失い、ただ涙することしかできず、絶望しています。悔しくて悔しくて仕方がありません」
I am in despair that I suddenly lost my beloved wife and daughter. I am mortified. This will never go away, no matter how long the time passes.

控えめな性格の奥様とお嬢様の画像を公開することは苦渋の決断だったということですが、「この画像を見ていただき、必死に生きていた若い女性と、たった3年しか生きられなかった命があったんだということを現実的に感じてほしいです」と。
There existed a young woman who embraced life and a child who could only live for three years. I want people to grasp the reality of that fact.

一方、ネット上などでは「なぜ運転手が逮捕されないのか」「さん付けなのか」等の uproar（騒ぎ、叫び声）が噴出しました。
Strong criticism has emerged online after an elderly driver who fatally crashed his car into a mother and her young daughter at an intersection has yet to be arrested over the incident, with many believing the offender's "elite" status in society is behind the lenient treatment.

警視庁= The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) は、運転手も入院をしており「証拠隠滅や逃亡の恐れがない」= there is no fear of him destroying evidence and escaping from police としてますが、不信感を抱く人も多いようでした。
その後の調査で、ブレーキをかけた形跡はなく＝ No skid marks have been detected on the road 、ドライブレコーダー＝ dashboard camera の記録等から、踏み間違い＝ the driver mistakenly stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake と見られます。
6月には福岡でも高齢ドライバーによる死亡事故がありました。車が暴走するという単語には以下がありました。

政府は現在75歳以上の運転手には認知症テストを行っています。
The government now implements mandatory cognitive tests for drivers 75 or older.

池袋の運転手も2年前に受けていますが、no problems were observed at that time だったそうです。
一連の事故を受け、政府は自動ブレーキ＝ automatic braking のような安全機能＝ advanced safety technologies が搭載された車のみ運転できる、高齢者専用の新たな運転免許制度の創設に検討しています。
The government is considering the creation of a new driver licensing system for elderly people amid a recent string of serious traffic accidents involving elderly drivers.
