A prominent Sikh leader, Mr Nijjar was shot dead in his vehicle by two masked gunmen on a June afternoon in a city about 30km east of Vancouver.

Nijjar was a naturalized Canadian and outspoken advocate for Khalistan. New Delhi had declared him a "designated terrorist" in 2020. Khalistan is the creation of an independent Sikh homeland in the Punjab region of India.
