民進党の頼清徳氏が台湾新総統就任

台湾で5月20日、民進党の頼清徳氏が新しい総統に就任しました。

Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party took the oath of office in a ceremony at the presidential office in Taipei on Monday morning.

就任演説では中国との関係について現状維持を強調。ともに平和と繁栄を追及すると語りました。

 In his inauguration speech, Lai has stressed that he will neither yield nor provoke and maintain the status quo in Taiwan's relations with China and pursue peace and prosperity together.

しかし中国は頼氏を分離主義者だとしており、台湾を取り囲む形の軍事演習を行いました。

Beijing claims Taiwan as part of China. China has called Lai a separatist and trying to keep him in check. It considers the one-China principle as a prerequisite for China to engage in dialogue with Taiwan.

China has started two days of military exercises around Taiwan, with its military calling them "strong punishment" for the self-ruled island's "separatist acts".

Taiwan lawmakers turned violent with one another in Taipei's parliament on Friday during a dispute over chamber reforms.

A scuffle broke out days before the president-elect takes office. 

Politicians from both sides brandished protest signs and engaged in rowdy arguments.

日本の超党派議員らが就任式に出席したことに対し、中国の呉江浩駐日大使は批判して、「日本が中国分裂を企てる戦車に縛られてしまえば、日本の民衆が火の中に連れ込まれることになる」と発言しました。

Chinese Ambassador Wu Jianghao criticized a cross-party group of Japanese lawmakers for attending the inauguration ceremony, saying it was an open attempt to support what he called "Taiwan independence separatists." He went on to say that Japanese people would be dragged into fire, if Japan ties itself to forces plotting to split China.

◇外務省が厳重抗議しましたが、ペルソナノングラータとしての追放にまでは至りませんでした。

Japan's Foreign Ministry says it has lodged a stern protest with the Chinese ambassador over his recent remarks that Japanese people would be dragged into fire if Japan supports Taiwan's independence. However, the government spokesman declined to say whether it would designate the Ambassador as persona non grata to force him out of the country.
