The Palestinian militant group Hamas launched an unprecedented surprise assault on Israel on 7 October, with hundreds of gunmen infiltrating communities near the Gaza Strip.

Since 2007, Israel has imposed an air, land and sea blockade on the Gaza Strip, saying the move is necessary to safeguard the country from Hamas’ attacks. Gaza is surrounded by concrete walls and barbed wire fences. It is called “the world’s largest open-air prison.”
More than 2 million Palestinians live in the 140-square-mile besieged enclave, making it one of the most densely populated places on earth.

At a large music festival in the desert near the Gaza-Israel border, dozens of Hamas fighters opened fire on festival revelers.
People fled in a hail of bullets. Horrified concertgoers dove into an underbrush to try and save their lives at the Israeli festival where Hamas terrorists slaughtered 260 innocent people.

The latest Israel-Hamas war has become the deadliest and most destructive of the five wars fought between the two sides since Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007.

Hamas seized roughly 220 people as hostages. At least 33 children are among those captive.

The Palestinian death toll in Gaza rose to over 7,700 in air raids carried out by the Israeli military in response.
Israeli troops are also massing along the Gaza boundary and Palestinians are bracing for a major ground operation.

Over a million Gazans have fled in search of safety to the south of the enclave near the Egyptian border after the Israeli military warned them to evacuate before its expected ground offensive. It is the biggest and fastest exodus of Palestinians since the creation of the state of Israel in 1948.
