バッタが大量に発生して農作物や牧草を食い荒らす「蝗害（こうがい）＝locust plague」が、東アフリカを中心に被害を広げ、深刻な被害をもたらしています。非常事態を宣言した国もあります。
Billions of desert locusts（サバクトビバッタ） in East Africa are swarming at "unprecedented numbers" and pose a huge threat to the region's food insecurity, the UN warns. The swarms are so bad that Somalia declared a national emergency.

The insects have since fanned out and wreaked havoc on farms from East Africa to India before making their way into Pakistan from the desert on the country’s southwestern border with Iran.

Desert locusts are the most destructive（破壊的な、有害な） of all locust species — known for their speedy growth and enormous appetites.The insects, which eat their own body weight in food every day, are breeding （繁殖する）so fast that numbers could grow four hundredfold by June. Swarms typically can occupy 100 square kilometers. Even at this size, they can contain between 4 billion and 8 billion locusts, with the ability to consume the equivalent（同等のもの、等量物） of what at least 3.5 million people would eat in a day.
30年で最悪の状況のパキスタンでは、食べ物の値段の高騰を招いています。国連食糧農業機関（FAO＝Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations）によると、ケニア、エチオピア、ソマリア３カ国で1000万人を超す人が深刻な食糧不足＝acute food shortageに直面しています。
Pakistan’s farmers are struggling to combat the worst locust plague in nearly three decades as insect swarms decimate entire harvests in the country’s agricultural heartlands and send food prices soaring.

この大襲来により、収穫を前にした現金化できる作物が荒廃する事が恐れられます。

環境や人にも有害な殺虫剤より、成長中のバッタにも効果のある生物由来の殺虫剤＝biologically based ‘biopesticidesや、カビ＝fungusを応用することが推奨されています。しかし入手が難しく、化学薬品に頼っているのが現状です。
Researchers are also concerned that spraying chemicals（化学薬品） such as the widely used insecticide chlorpyrifos could be harmful to humans and the environment. ・In contrast to chlorpyrifos, biopesticides work best when young locusts — known as hoppers — are still developing their wings. ・The problem for the present outbreak is that biopesticides are not available in large quantities at short notice. That is forcing governments to resort to（～に頼る、手段を使う） chemical sprays.
