1972年5月15日、沖縄県がアメリカから本土に復帰。その日から50年の節目の日を迎えました。

米国占領下の沖縄では、貨幣はドル、車は右側通行、本土へはパスポートが必要でした。
During U.S. rule, Okinawans used the dollar and followed American traffic laws, and any trips between Okinawa and mainland Japan required passports.
日本の面積の0.6％の沖縄には、米軍の基地の70％が集中しています。
27年間のアメリカ統治下で、沖縄の人々の生活は米軍基地とともにありました。犯罪や事故も、日本の捜査権には限りがあります。
Okinawa still hosts the majority of US military bases in Japan.
Despite accounting for only 0.6 percent of the country's total land area, Okinawa remains home to some 70 percent of the total land used by U.S. military installations in Japan.
Okinawa has seen a number of accidents and crimes involving U.S. troops over the years.
However, Japanese authorities face limitations in exercising their investigative power because of a Status of Forces Agreement （日米地位協定）.

Okinawa has ranked the lowest among the country’s 47 prefectures in average income per capita due to a lack of strong industries aside from tourism.
It lags behind the rest of Japan economically.
記念式典に出席した岸田首相はスピーチで、『沖縄の潜在力を最大限に引き出し、強い沖縄経済を実現する』と述べました。
On Okinawa’s economic fragility（もろさ、脆弱さ）, with its per capita income remaining the lowest in Japan, Kishida said the government will work to “unlock Okinawa’s potential to the maximum” and realize “a strong Okinawan economy.”

今の知事は基地反対の立場ですが、基地に対する考え方は世代間で差があり、若い世代は現状維持に傾いています。
Okinawa’s current governor, Denny Tamaki, would like the base footprint reduced.

Some 60% of elderly people in Okinawa Prefecture feel it is unfair the prefecture continues to bear a burden by hosting many U.S. military bases, while younger generations tend to accept the status quo, a survey has found.
